BANOR FOR MAREVIVO

BANOR ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORTS MAREVIVO

Marevivo is a well-known Italian environmental association that has been defending the sea and its resources for over 30 years. After the first project in 2019 to support the #StopMicroFiber campaign, Banor supported several projects to protect the environment, an increasingly pressing priority for our society.
With its commitment to support Marevivo, Banor wants to make a real contribution to the fight against pollution of the seas. There is no time to lose and practical action must be taken to protect the planet.

PROJECTS SUPPORTING MAREVIVO

BANOR’S SUPPORT FOR MAREVIVO CONTINUES IN CALA VIOLINA

On Saturday 8 April 2023, a beach clean-up activity was carried out in Cala Violina (Tuscany), with the involvement of many volunteers who collected 70 kg of waste.
The initiative was supported by Banor, which in 2022 adopted the beach in cooperation with Marevivo and within the framework of the national campaign “Adotta una spiaggia / Adopt a beach”. The initiative was sponsored by the Municipality of Scarlino and the Tuscany Region, in cooperation with Tartamare and Terramare.

REMOVAL OF A GHOST NET AT THE SECCHE DI VADA, IN THE LIGURIAN SEA

Banor supported the removal of a 300-metres long ghost net, weighing approximately 450 kg. The operation was completed over the weekend of 12-13 November 2022 at the Secche di Vada, in the Ligurian Sea.
This area is particularly rich in biodiversity and fish fauna, due to the upwelling process, where cold, deep water, rich in nutrients, rises to the surface, thus attracting fish and other organisms. This is the reason why is strongly threatened by overfishing.

BANOR ADOPTS CALA VIOLINA BEACH

On Saturday September 3, 2022 the Municipality of Scarlino and the Tuscany Region, supported by Banor SIM, sponsored a free and open event to carry out a beach clean-up activity removing waste from the beach, together with the Tartamare and Terramare organisations.
In order to raise awareness among citizens and tourists about the value of the beach ecosystem and the importance of sustainable behaviour in favour of this extraordinary natural environment, three informative boards, with Banor logo, were placed on the beach.
Also, portable ashtrays have been distributed to the people on the beach.

BANOR ADOPTS BUFALINA BEACH

With Banor’s support, on Sunday, October 31, 2021, a group of 200 volunteers cleaned up the Bufalina Beach, in Tuscany, an area of special environmental value located within the Parco Regionale Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli.
At the end of the day more than 300 kilos of waste were collected, mostly plastic.

REMOVAL OF ABANDONED FISHING NETS ON THE SEA-BED OF THE ISOLA DEL GIGLIO

Banor supported the removal of an abandoned fishing net on the seabed of the Isola del Giglio. Fishing gear is the largest source of marine waste all over the world and represents the toughest threat marine biodiversity.

“BLU AL PLURALE” WEBINAR – WORLD OCEANS DAY 2020

During 150 minutes of live streaming, 3 moderators and more than 20 guests met to discuss how to protect the sea and preserve its ecosystems. Among them institutional representatives, scientists, stakeholders and relevant personalities interested or involved in environmental issues. Angelo Meda, Head of Equity at Banor SIM, took part in the “Climate change and economy” Panel which was live streamed on 8 June 2020.

BANOR OFFICES BECOME PLASTIC FREE

Banor SIM has promoted the use of “Banor for Marevivo” water bottles within its offices in order to discourage the use of single-use plastics and to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment.

“MARE MOSTRO: UN MARE DI PLASTICA?” – 2019 CAMPAIGN

In the summer of 2019, Banor supported the “Mare Mostro: un mare di plastica? #StopMicroFiber” campaign promoted by Marevivo with the aim of raising awareness on the issue of synthetic fabric microplastics released during washing-machine cycles and their effects on sea and human life. This type of fiber, particularly polyester, releases millions of microparticles into each washing which are not captured by the purification plants’ filtering systems and which return to the seas, thus entering the food chain.

MAREVIVO ORGANISATION

Marevivo has been working since 1985 for the protection of the sea and the environment, against pollution and illegal fishing, for the study of biodiversity, for the promotion and enhancement of marine protected areas, for education in schools and universities, for sustainable development and for raising awareness of all sea-related issues.

The sea accounts for 70% of the surface of the planet, produces more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs one-third of carbon dioxide (gas responsible for climate change) and accounts for 98% of the living area.
